“Ah! Have I become a ‘Dungeon Seeker’?”
One morning, upon waking up in my bed, that was the question that came to my mind.
As I got up and looked at the back of my right hand, I noticed strange patterns appearing.
I am Muso Daichi, a simple ‘freeter’ living in contemporary Japan.
I am nineteen years old, single, and live alone.
I became independent after finishing high school and getting a job, but due to the gloomy work environment, I quit after three months.
Now, I manage with temporary jobs to survive.
Perhaps, even for someone like me, a unique opportunity in life has arrived.
It has been around thirty years since the appearance of ‘Dungeons’ in contemporary earth.
This also marks thirty years since ‘Dungeon Seekers’ emerged among humanity.
In these dungeons that suddenly appeared around the world, numerous Monsters roam.
Initially, the invasion of these monsters to the surface caused a great uproar, but now a system has been established to deal with them.
At the same time the dungeons emerged, Dungeon Seekers appeared among humanity.
They are the ones granted the power to dive into the dungeons and fight the monsters.
The responsibility of dealing with the dungeons falls on them.
It is said that one day, without any prior warning, one simply “becomes” a Dungeon Seeker.
It is like awakening to powers and senses that did not exist before.
At this moment, I felt as if I had “become” that.
It was as if I had awakened while sleeping.
“[Open stats]”
Sitting alone in the narrow and neglected room for which I pay fifty-nine thousand yen in rent, I muttered.
Then, something akin to a semi-transparent board appeared before my eyes.

Although no one taught me this, I intuitively knew that by muttering “Open stats!” I would see my own State visualized.
The semi-transparent board was not material; it could be passed through by touching it with the hand. However, by gesturing as if touching it with my fingers, it could be interacted with.
Furthermore, there were several things that, despite having no reason to know them, were now known to me. It seemed that this was how becoming a Dungeon Seeker worked.
“Okay, why not try going to the dungeon?”
Today, I didn’t have to work at my temporary job.
After a simple breakfast of toast and eggs, I minimally prepared myself and left home.
